Tips for choosing a weightlifting belt

“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” – Ayn Rand

Material

Look for belts made from high-quality, durable materials such as leather or sturdy nylon. Leather belts are often preferred for their durability and ability to conform to the lifter’s body over time.

Width

Opt for a belt with a width of around 4 inches. This width provides adequate support to the lower back without restricting movement.

Thickness

The belt should be thick enough to offer support but not so thick that it limits your range of motion. A thickness of around 10mm is common for weightlifting belts.

Buckle or Lever

Weightlifting belts typically come with either a buckle or a lever for closure. Both can be effective, but some lifters prefer the quick adjustability of a lever, while others prefer the simplicity of a buckle.

Fit

It’s crucial to get the right size. Measure your waist at your belly button and choose a belt size accordingly. The belt should be snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit a couple of fingers between the belt and your body.

Stiffness

The belt should provide sufficient stiffness to support your lower back during heavy lifts. However, it should also have some flexibility to allow for proper movement.

Brand and Reviews

Consider reputable brands known for producing quality weightlifting equipment. Read reviews from other lifters to get an idea of the belt’s performance and durability.

PURPOSE

Different belts are designed for specific types of lifting. If you’re primarily doing powerlifting, a powerlifting belt with consistent width may be suitable. For general weightlifting and CrossFit, a tapered belt might be more comfortable for various movements.

Remember

Remember, the right weightlifting belt can vary based on individual preferences and body types. It’s a good idea to try on different belts, if possible, and test them during your workouts to ensure they meet your specific needs.

My new belt is the Untamed Strength – Lever Belt by Pioneer Power Lifting.

With the Untamed Strength spider web design red splatter on the outside and black suede inside this belt is just badass. The belt has black edging, stitching, and black lever (or buckle if that is more to your liking.)
